It goes without saying that tattoos are relatively permanent, which is an inconvenient fact for those who wish they weren’t around anymore. If you have a tattoo regret and you’d rather have a clean slate, you have options.
At our Skin Center MedSpa, there is now an effective treatment for tattoo removal of dark tattoo inks.
Most physicians today consider laser treatment to be one of the best methods to remove tattoos. The Q-switched YAG laser, which we use in our facility, is the most frequently used laser for tattoo removal. With our Q-switched YAG laser we can effectively treat dark tattoo inks, specifically black, blue and green. These treatments can provide dramatic results with minimal risk or side effects.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
Tattoo ink and natural pigmentation, like melanin, absorb short pulse duration/high peak energy Q-switched pulses so quickly that they create a photo-acoustic effect within the pigment clusters. This effect breaks down the ink into much smaller particles that can be more easily removed by the body’s natural filtering system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our Nurse Practitioner will apply a topical numbing cream to the tattoo thirty minutes prior to the treatment to reduce sensation in the area. Once treatment starts, you will put on protective eye shields and Nancy will test your skin’s reaction to the laser, which helps her determine the most effective energy for your treatment. The treatment itself consists of placing a hand piece against the surface of the skin and activating the laser light to break up the tattoo pigment. Patients say that each pulse feels like a grease splatter or like a rubber band snapping against the skin.
The time needed to treat the tattoo varies based on the size of the area covered by the tattoo, but small tattoos can generally be treated in 15 minutes. Smaller tattoos require fewer pulses while larger ones require more. In either case, the tattoo requires several treatments and multiple visits. At each treatment, the tattoo should become progressively lighter.
Immediately following treatment, you will be given an ice pack to apply to soothe the treated area, and then ointment and bandage will be applied. The area should be covered with sunblock when out in the sun and kept clean and dry.
You can resume most normal activities immediately following treatment as long as you protect the area that was treated by keeping it clean and dry for one week or until healed. Some treatment areas may blister and crust over, usually within 3-5 days. The area should be completely healed one week after the treatment date.
In the weeks following your laser treatment, the body’s cleansing and circulatory systems remove the pigmented debris from the treated areas. Depending on the colors and age of the tattoo, the colors begin to fade. It is typical for the next treatment to be scheduled & performed within 6-8 weeks.
Yes, results are permanent.
The best tattoo removal candidates are men or women with light skin and tattoos with dark pigment. All skin types can undergo tattoo removal, and all professional tattoos can be removed, but individuals with lighter skin have better results. The time it takes to completely remove the tattoo varies based on the size, age, and colors in the tattoo.
