Liposuction

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction-assisted lipectomy, is a proven and safe surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from the body. Many men and women are within a normal weight range for their height and build but have isolated fat pockets that do not respond to diet and exercise. Some healthy but overweight individuals may also struggle with areas of stubborn fat. Localized fat is often an inherited trait, and liposuction is usually the only way to eliminate it. Liposuction can remove localized collections of unwanted fatty tissue from almost anywhere on the body to produce a smoother, leaner body contour.

Thinking About Getting Liposuction?

circle-1

With general weight loss and weight gain, stubborn areas of fat are usually unaffected. Getting rid of fat from your target areas may only be possible with a substantial amount of weight loss, or it may be completely impossible without surgery. Liposuction can permanently eliminate the fat that persists despite weight loss, dieting, and exercise. With permanent fat reduction, you may have a more positive self-image and feel greater motivation to live a healthy lifestyle to maintain your slimmer figure.

circle-2

A frustrating issue with weight loss is that you may not lose weight from the areas that need it most. However, with liposuction, you can target specific areas of localized fat to tone those areas in need of attention. Liposuction can be used on the thighs, hips, abdomen, calves, arms, and many other areas, even the neck. With this procedure, you can sculpt your body contours according to your desires by getting liposuction treatment of each area in need of slimming.

Some people are naturally blessed with a genetically slender figure and a fast metabolism. Others are less fortunate and struggle to maintain a healthy body weight and an attractively fit physique. Liposuction can help you achieve a leaner body shape with smooth, slim contours by suctioning away the excess fat. While you will not lose a significant amount of weight with liposuction, the procedure permanently removes fat to give you a trim and toned figure.

Having a body shape you can be proud of does wonders for self-confidence. Liposuction directly targets your offending trouble areas and eliminates stubborn fat to improve your body contours. Finally achieving the body shape you’ve longed for can dramatically boost your confidence in your figure and in yourself.

Your Liposuction Treatment Options

During your consultation, Dr. Marcus will discuss the various approaches to fat removal, such as liposuction, CoolSculpting®, and KYBELLA®. Based on his experience with thousands of cases, Dr. Marcus will be able to determine the best approach to meet your aesthetic desires.

Tumescent Liposuction

  • Depending on the treatment area(s), you may be given local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia.
  • Your treatment will last one to four hours depending on the area(s) to be treated.
  • The outpatient procedure will take place in our fully certified, private, in-office surgical suite.
  • Dr. Marcus introduces a saline solution with local anesthetic into the target tissues before suctioning. This solution numbs the area and minimizes bleeding.
  • The fat is suctioned from the target area through a liposuction cannula.

Smartlipo® Laser Assisted

  • Local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia may be administered depending on the treatment area(s).
  • Your treatment will last one to four hours depending on the area(s) to be treated.
  • The outpatient procedure will take place in our fully certified, private, in-office surgical suite.
  • Dr. Marcus inserts a fine laser-emitting fiber through small incisions near the treatment area. This laser tip liquefies the fat so that it is easier to remove.
  • A liposuction cannula is used to extract the liquefied fat.

SAFELipo®

  • Depending on the treatment area(s), anesthesia in the form of local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia may be administered.
  • Your treatment will last from one to four hours depending on the area(s) to be treated.
  • The outpatient procedure will take place in our fully certified, private, in-office surgical suite.
  • Dr. Marcus uses SAFELipo®, an advanced liposuction technique that achieves smoother results with less discomfort.
  • With SAFELipo®, Dr. Marcus loosens and separates out the unwanted fat cells, removes them, then equalizes the remaining layer of fat without damaging the blood vessels, skin, or other tissues.

After Liposuction

After liposuction, it is important to follow your postoperative instructions to ensure the safest and quickest possible recovery. In addition to the following recovery guidelines, Dr. Marcus will provide you with specific aftercare instructions.

Immediately After

You will return home to rest. Swelling and bruising will be present and can be minimized with cold compresses. Medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort, which should subside within one or two days. With Dr. Marcus’s gentle techniques and advanced technologies, most patients report less pain, swelling, and bruising than with earlier methods. Some results will immediately be apparent. Avoid strenuous exercise.

3 to 7 Days After

If you had minor liposuction, you can return to work a few days after your procedure if you are healing well. If you had larger areas treated with liposuction, wait to go back to work for approximately one week. Swelling and bruising will persist. Avoid strenuous exercise.

3 to 4 Weeks After

Swelling and bruising should subside significantly and continue to subside. You may be able to reintroduce light to moderate exercise. Results will be much more noticeable.

6 Months to 1 Year After

The full effects will be evident, though for some patients, results will have already been evident within a few months after liposuction. The more fat that is removed, the longer it takes for full results to be seen because the skin needs to adapt to a greater change.

Liposuction Patients

  • I wanted to let you know, in writing, how pleased I am with the results of my cosmetic surgeries and to compliment you and your staff for a very positive experience. I was immediately impressed, on my first visit for a facelift consult, with your professional manner and thoroughness in answering my questions and discussing at length the procedures and anticipated outcome. Your reputation as an “artist” was upheld with the ‘refreshment’ of my face, and the recent liposuction of my mid-section has fulfilled my life-long dream of having a flat stomach. You and your team are all efficient, caring, accommodating and friendly – making it a pleasure to be a patient there. I, at 60 years young, feel great about the results and the feedback from my friends and my mirror tell me I look great, too.

  • This is just a short letter to express my gratitude for the wonderful work you’ve done for me. To date I’ve had liposuction, tummy tuck and laser surgery on my face. I wanted to thank you all for making these surgeries such a pleasant experience. You, Dr. Marcus, made sure that I was fully aware of what I could expect so that my expectations were realistic, and your wonderful office staff was caring and informative to the “nth” degree. I have nothing but the highest regard for the work I’ve had done and look forward to having more done in the future with you. You have allowed me to have the self-confidence that I lacked for so many years. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals within a healthy weight range but with isolated areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Healthy but overweight patients may also be good candidates. Some individuals may also be candidates for CoolSculpting®, which is a non-invasive fat removal treatment that freezes fat cells so that the body flushes them out.

Liposuction can be used almost anywhere on the body. It is most often used to slim down the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, knees, calves, ankles, neck, and upper arms.

Liposuction does not treat skin laxity. However, it may be combined with another procedure that does, such as an arm lift or tummy tuck. Dr. Marcus can help you select the appropriate procedures for your skin tightening needs to combine with your liposuction.

Although infrequent, some complications can occur with this surgery. These include bleeding, infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. Some skin numbness is to be expected after surgery, but this is usually only temporary. It is possible for some numbness to persist or even be permanent. Skin discoloration and irregularity may occur in some instances.

Liposuction can target multiple areas of the body in a single treatment session. For most patients, it is not likely that more than one session will be needed to achieve their desired results. For others, small, secondary touch-up procedures may sometimes be helpful.
