Breast Augmentation

Before & After Photos

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, will enhance the size of your breasts as well as give you a better-proportioned figure. It is designed to increase the size of small breasts, correct breast assymetry, and improve the appearance of breasts that have lost their volume and shape due to weight loss, childbirth, or simply as a result of aging.

Breast augmentation is one of Dr. Marcus’ fields of expertise. He has been performing breast augmentations since his Residency in 1983! Dr. Marcus usually places the implants through an incision under the breast, but will also perform the surgery through the areola or endoscopically through a belly-button approach, thereby avoiding any scar on the breast itself. This technique is referred to as Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (or TUBA) or “scarless” breast implant surgery.

As is the case all over the world, most implants used by Dr. Marcus today are made of silicone. Saline is still used, but on a much less frequent basis. Silicone is a more natural looking and feeling implant. Its safety has been proven to be equal to that of saline. Silicone implants cannot be placed through the belly button because they come prefilled.

Implants are usually placed beneath the pectoral muscle, but Dr. Marcus will sometimes recommend an over the muscle placement. In selective cases this technique offers a more natural look and feel and the recovery is much easier with a faster return to normal activity.
Ask Dr.Marcus if this option is a fit for you.

Decisions about the type of implant chosen, implant placement and the incision utilized are personal choices that are carefully addressed for each patient at the time of their consultation with Dr. Marcus. His many years of experience will make you feel comfortable with this process and the decisions you make. See our Before and After Gallery and our many testimonials.

Breast augmentations are performed by Dr. Marcus in his fully accredited, office surgical suite. Surgery is usually performed under light general anesthesia. This way you will be asleep and feel nothing during the procedure. The medications used during this process will allow you to wake quickly, feeling happy and rested, with no nausea. Anesthesia is provided by a board certified anesthesiologist so you will sleep through the entire one to two hour operation. Be sure to arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery and stay with you at least the first night following surgery.

After surgery, medication can control any pain or discomfort, which should subside in a day or two. Swelling and some bruising of the breasts will disappear gradually. You will be up and about a day or two after surgery and can return to work within a week (depending on your healing). However, you should still take it easy and avoid heavy lifting, pushing and pulling for a two weeks or so. Sutures are dissolving and do not require removal. Scars are quite minimal and usually become barely noticeable.

Breast augmentations are performed to increase the size and enhance the shape of the breasts.

The length of a breast augmentation procedure may vary and is dependant upon a number of factors, but generally takes from 1-1 1/2 hours.

Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia are typically utilized when performing a breast augmentation procedure at our Santa Rosa, CA cosmetic surgery center.
